Broken Mac (Intel)
Firstly, if you can log into the Mac, make sure it is running with the latest software updates. You can check this by going into System Settings, General, Software Update.
Next, if you do have AppleCare, it’s probably best to utilise it - it’s what you paid for after all!
“My Mac turns on, but I cannot get to the login screen”
- Try seeing if you can boot into Safe Mode. You can do this by holding Shift down while pressing the power button. You may need a wired keyboard rather than one that works through a Bluetooth or wireless dongle to do this.
Can Access Safe Mode
- If the issues started after installing new software or an update, uninstall or reverse any changes you made.
- A scan for malware may also be a good idea, If you do not have an anti-virus, MalwareBytes have a free version which can be used to help clean up infections, or just give you a peace of mind with a scan to see if the device is infected or not.
- If you have Time Machine set up, see if you can rollback to a point before the issues began.
Cannot Access Safe Mode (Or The Above Failed)
-
Access Recovery Mode by holding down
Command
and the letterR
at the same time while turning the device on. You may need a wired keyboard rather than one that works through a Bluetooth or wireless dongle to do this. -
When in Recovery Mode, run Disk Utility to see if there are errors on your disk.
-
You are also able to restore using Time Machine here if you have it set up.
-
If all else fails, you might consider reinstalling the operating system and start from a blank slate (with your important files backed up for course!). You can also do this here in Recovery Mode.
“My Mac does not turn on”
- Is it powered correctly? Try moving the Mac to a different power supply or change cables if possible.
- Can you hear any sounds or see any lights? This may suggest the Mac is turning on, but there is an issue with the display/screen.
- Remove all external devices, such as keyboards, mice, external drives and so on, and try booting again.
